One of the last major links in the Interstate System of highways in New York State was opened today, connecting Interstate 88 to the Gov. Dewey Thruway at Exit 25-A south of Schenectady. With the opening of the link, a new interchange, the 117-mile Interstate 88, which was built at a cost of $400 million, is now complete between here and Binghamton, except for a connection at Binghamton to Interstate 81.Previously, traffic had been diverted from Interstate 88 to Route 7 to make the connection with the Thruway. Interstate 88 has been opened in sections over the past decade.Since construction of the national Interstate System was started in 1956, $2.5 billion has been spent in New York to build 1,367 miles of the divided high-speed road, according to figures prepared by the state's Department of Transportation. Of that amount, the Federal Government paid 90 percent and the state 10 percent. Controversy Over Projects.
